MIFFED...the school update
Well...I talked with the School district. They do not allow ANY variances for children based on intelligence and readiness for school. They only allow a six week 'age' variance, so if your child turns five up to six weeks after the cutoff you can get a variance. I am miffed beyond words! This is so stupid(sorry Piper, Mummy owes the jar $1). So smart kids have to suffer it out, get bored and frustrated and ACT out.
We are going to look at schools outside the district, sadly some of the better private schools are way out of our reach. It's days like this I wish we could pack up and take the girls home to New Zealand.
Oh to be wealthy, and actually have 'choices'

I think I'd owe that jar 10 bucks I'd be cursing so much... so sorry. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I am with ya - I just had to fight the fight with her school - she was in the 3 yr old class - bday 10/26 - so technically should stay in the 3 yr old class and not prek4 = nope nada - she tested at a 5 yr old level - so after keeping on them - she is in the prek4 class!
1 point K - 0 to the school - I sure hope I don't have to do this each yr - the thought I my child "learning her letters..." which she knew before she was 2 - almost put me in tears!
You go girl!!! There is hope out there~!

So sorry you are dealing with this.... I had no idea about the cutoff for September. I wish you could bring that little sparkplug to CHA! She would run the Class of 2022 there!!

Other than this, I hope you have had a great summer.

Blessings,
Diana

That's really too bad. Did you check with the private schools? I know Aidan's Catholic school has moved kids around according to ability and not age and Catholic school is really reasonable compared to most private school tuitions.

I am lucky because none of my kiddos birthdays were close to the cut off. I totally get your frustration. I quess they have to draw the line somewhere with the age debate. If you put her in a private Kindergarten, would she be able to start 1st grade or will she have to repeat Kindergarten? Our area schools will not allow kids to start K early, but will allow them to start 1st grade if they complete K privately. Seriously, what is the difference? Good luck with your decision.

ugh, what a bummer. our PRIVATE schools have different cutoff dates (our public schools system is a disaster, so private school it is) but they are usually open to variances.

best of luck to you and piper!

That's nuts. I hope you can find something else maybe not too far.
Here the limit is December 31st so my girl was able to start JK before being 4.
Can you believe in France, school starts at 3. From there to the end university it's almost free (more like in NZ I guess).
At least you know why you pay taxes...

It sucks that families are to shell out money and turn to private education to get their child's needs met.

The public education system here in the U.S. STINKS!!! (& I am speaking as a public school teacher)...there really is NO EXCUSE for this country's educational system to be so messed up!!

Every state's age cutoff is different which is crazy...we're lucky that NY's age cutoff is Dec. 31st, so with an early Dec. birthday Kiara makes it in...yeah, in to the 1 of only 2 good schools in the entire city!! So much for moving out of the district.

I'm stickin' a couple of bucks in a jar for ya! ;)
